modu music jacket with JBL turns your mini-phone into a mini-boombox

We’ve seen plenty of teensy speakers setups for phones, some wired, some Bluetooth, but the beauty of modu is that in this case, the speakers become the phone. Slip modu into this “music jacket” built by PCH International and you get some surprisingly good sound out of the stereo JBL Odyssey speakers, a quality speakerphone setup, and a regular (if incredibly fat) handset experience to boot. The phone side of the device includes a 2.2-inch display and a 3 megapixel camera with flash, and there’s a funky “digital sound meter” for visualizing your noise. The jacket will be available later this year; no word on price, but we expect it will stick with the modu trend of “cheap.”

New fabrication technique uses amorphous metals for building computer chips and killing machines

Sure, the march toward the ridiculous in the nanometer scale has continued unabated, but silicon can (probably) take us only so far. Some scientist types at Yale have developed a new fabrication process using bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), which are “amorphous metals” that can avoid crystalizing when cooled in a specific way. The upshot is that the metal — while seeming solid — acts as a slow-flowing liquid, with no structure beyond the atomic level. The BMGs can therefore replace several steps in the chip-stamping process, since they’re more durable than silicon, but are more pliable than normal metals. Right now the folks at Yale are making patterns as small as 13nm, with better processes to come.

Intel at chip conference: More wireless, less GHz

Future SoCs will have “flexible” radios included on-chip that handle Wi-Fi, WiMAX, 3G, Bluetooth and other widely used standards, according to Intel. As part of the focus on SoC, Intel is riveting its gaze on the integration of radio silicon, as mobile computers–handhelds, Netbooks, and laptops–become increasingly oriented around connectivity.

First Tesla Model S teaser shot silently sneaks onto the scene

Tesla just dropped word yesterday that a drivable prototype of its Model S sedan would be unveiled on March 26th, but the automaker has now gone one step further and let loose the first official teaser image of what we can only assume is said prototype. In true teaser fashion, there isn’t a whole lot to see, but as AutoblogGreen points out, it is fairly evident that the Model S is at least shorter than the rival Fisker Karma, and it seems to boast a larger passenger compartment to boot. Hit up the link below to check out a higher res shot, and don’t be surprised if Tesla continues to tease this one out right up until that March 26th launch date.

mophie's Juice Pack Air: world's thinnest iPhone 3G battery / case

mophie’s iPhone 3G Juice Pack received universal praise, and while the additional baggage bothered some, most users just appreciated being able to utilize 3G for more than 47 seconds without needing an AC outlet. Not one to rest on its laurels, the company has today introduced the new and improved version: Juice Pack Air. Contrary to popular belief, this actually isn’t intended for Apple’s MacBook Air (now there’s an idea to capitalize on, mophie), but instead, it’s the planet’s thinnest external iPhone 3G battery / case. The device houses a rechargeable 1,200mAh battery that “virtually doubles the amount of time you have to rock, talk, surf, and send messages.” Eager consumers can pre-order theirs now in black, purple or white, while patient souls can mellow out until they hit mophie’s website and Apple stores everywhere this Spring. Full release is after the jump.
